Heavy-Duty Twisted Galvanised Wall Ties

Heavy-Duty Twisted Galvanised Wall Ties

Code: BT500

Konsa heavy-duty twisted wall ties connect cavity brick walls where a robust flat-bar tie is required. They are manufactured from hot-dip galvanised mild-steel flat bar, with stainless-steel versions available on request for coastal or corrosive environments. Select a tie length approximately 20–30 mm shorter than the wall thickness, subject to the masonry design. Typical usage is approximately 3–4 ties per square metre, and custom lengths can be manufactured.

Head Restraint Systems

Head Restraint Systems

Code: HRS-UO-L

Konsa head restraint systems provide a sliding connection at the top of masonry walls, helping restrain lateral movement while accommodating specified vertical movement. The stem fits within the cavity and accepts one-way or two-way sliding ties with different head and tail options. Units are manufactured to project dimensions in galvanised mild steel or stainless steel. Specify the head configuration, stem length, tie type, material and fixing detail when requesting a quotation.

Brick Wall Systems Guide

Brick wall systems consist of more than bricks and mortar.

Modern masonry construction uses reinforcement, wall ties, movement joint products, damp-proof materials and connection systems that work together to improve stability, durability and construction quality.

Konsa supplies a range of brick wall accessories and reinforcement products for residential, commercial, industrial and civil construction applications.

What Is a Brick Wall System?

A brick wall system includes the various components used together to construct masonry walls.

Depending on the application these may include:

  • Brick reinforcement
  • Brick mesh
  • Cavity wall ties
  • Wall starters
  • Movement joint systems
  • Damp-proof products
  • Joint fillers
  • Wall connectors

Each component performs a specific function within the overall wall construction.

Common Brick Wall Products

  • Brick Reinforcement

Installed within mortar joints to reinforce masonry and assist with crack control in suitable applications.

  • Brick Mesh / Brickforce

Horizontal reinforcement commonly installed within mortar joints as specified by the project design. It helps tie masonry together and improve resistance to cracking from movement.

  • Wall Starters

Provide a mechanical connection between new masonry and existing concrete or masonry structures.

  • Wall Ties

Used in cavity wall construction to connect wall leaves while maintaining the cavity.

  • Movement Joint Products

Allow controlled movement where expansion, contraction or structural movement is expected.

  • Damp Proof Products

Assist in controlling moisture movement through masonry where required by the building design.

Why Masonry Reinforcement Is Used

Brick and block masonry performs extremely well under compression but has relatively limited tensile strength.

Movement caused by temperature changes, moisture movement, settlement and structural loading can introduce tensile stresses within masonry.

Horizontal reinforcement such as brick reinforcement or brick mesh / Brickforce is commonly specified within mortar joints to improve crack control and strengthen the wall system where required by the design. Reinforcement assists with crack control; it does not eliminate cracking.

Typical Applications

  • Residential Housing
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Industrial Buildings
  • Boundary Walls
  • Retaining Structures (where appropriate to the design)
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Infrastructure Projects

Choosing Brick Wall Accessories

The correct product depends on:

  • Wall type
  • Cavity or solid wall
  • Reinforcement requirements
  • Movement joints
  • Wall thickness
  • Moisture protection
  • Connection details
  • Project drawings
  • Engineer's specifications

Products should always be selected according to the project documentation and applicable construction requirements.

Benefits of Using Purpose-Made Masonry Accessories

  • Improved Wall Stability

Purpose-made reinforcement and connection products assist the overall masonry system when used as specified.

  • Consistent Construction

Purpose-made accessories provide repeatable installation compared with improvised site solutions.

  • Improved Crack Control

Correct reinforcement and movement joint products can assist in managing movement within masonry where specified.

  • Professional Finishing

Dedicated accessories help create cleaner, more consistent masonry construction.

Brick Wall Systems FAQs

What is a brick wall system?

A brick wall system includes the components used together with bricks or blocks and mortar to construct masonry walls, such as reinforcement, wall ties, connection products, movement joint accessories and damp-proof materials where specified.

What is brick reinforcement used for?

Brick reinforcement is installed within mortar joints to reinforce masonry and assist with crack control where required by the wall design. It does not eliminate cracking on its own.

What is brick mesh or Brickforce?

Brick mesh, also known as brickforce, is horizontal reinforcement commonly installed within mortar joints. It helps tie masonry together and support crack control where specified by the project design.

What are wall ties used for?

Wall ties are used in cavity wall construction to connect the wall leaves while maintaining the cavity, as required by the wall design and site details.

What is a wall starter?

A wall starter provides a mechanical connection between new masonry and an existing concrete or masonry structure. Exact product selection depends on the connection detail and project drawings.

Why are movement joints used?

Movement joints allow controlled expansion, contraction or structural movement within masonry where this is expected and specified by the building design.

What is damp proof course used for?

Damp-proof course is used to limit rising damp through masonry where required by the building design. Related damp-proof sheeting may also be used beneath floors and at other waterproofing details.

Can Konsa help identify the correct brick wall product?

Yes. Provide details of your wall type, wall thickness and application and Konsa can help identify suitable products from the available range.
